Project Overview

The product: Snackflix App

Snackflix is an app that allows users to order movie snacks ahead of time, with the bonus of delivery and movie ticket buying options all in one app. This app was created for moviegoers who just love to show up to the movies.

Project duration: 4 months: October 2023 - January 2024

The problem: Be able to order healthy alternatives at the movies without the language being a problem. Pre-order snacks so no queuing is needed.

The goal: SnackFlix brings a new way to ordering snacks allowing users to see the calories and have their snacks delivered to their seats. With the ease of language options available to make all users comfortable.

My role: Lead UX designer, UX researcher, and Visual designer.

Responsibilities: User research, wireframing, prototyping, designing, conducting usability studies, and accounting for accessibility.

Who are the users?

Line haters, Snack fanatics, and film lovers: The user research for the movie snack-ordering app revealed key insights that significantly influenced its design. Users expressed a strong preference for health-conscious snack options and emphasized the importance of having calorie information available to inform their choices. Additionally, the aversion to waiting in queues emerged as a common sentiment among participants, leading to a preference for convenient delivery or pickup options based on their time constraints.

The user research highlighted the app's potential success by focusing on health-conscious snack offerings, providing calorie information, offering convenient ordering options, and ensuring language accessibility. These considerations contribute to a user-centred design that enhances the overall experience for a broad range of moviegoers.

User Journey

A Yogi with a love for cinema: Claire’s goal is something most moviegoers face when they choose to live a health-conscious life. Providing users with relevant information about snacks allows for a new target group. The user map takes into account how Claire feels and the actions she takes to have an enjoyable experience. The map also provides improvements on how the app can benefit Claire.

Phase 1: Design Concept

Site Map: The construction of the sitemap was designed in a way that allowed the user to do all tasks from the homepage. Making it easy to locate the account to easily update preferences, and settings, check orders, and help answer any frequent questions they may have.

Paper Wireframes: The process of conceptualizing SnackFlix was one based on a combination of a delivery app and a cinema app. Combining the two concepts allowed for an app whose main purpose is to order snacks for a theatre but with the benefit of also buying a movie ticket. An all-in-one app for your movie experience. The homepage was designed in a way that users could access all parts of the app whilst showcasing all offers.

Digital Wireframes: The goal was for the app to have a logical flow, one where users can identify elements easily without the need for language as a problem. A point that stood out was the initial layout of the promo banner. The design was reiterated to be more simplistic based on the study conducted.

Low-Fidelity Prototype: The low-fidelity prototype testing was very insightful, as users provided essential feedback regarding layout, structure, and even iconography. This allowed for a more polished iteration.

Phase 2: Design Refinement

Mock-Ups: The goal with the redesign of the category page was due to layout, the usability study found that users preferred scroll options when looking at food items. The goal was to subdivide the categories for a more intuitive feel.

The usability study found that users had issues locating the delivery option, therefore it became apparent to clearly state it at the beginning. Users also requested the ability to re-order for repeat orders.

The second usability study found that users needed a way to link their movie to their order, adding a place to indicate a ticket under their preferred movie allowing the orders to be linked with an Apply button.

High-Fedility Prototype: The user flow starts at the homepage, allowing users to browse the app with the advertised promo banner, order snacks, look at movies and even re-order.

Going Forward

Takeaways

Impact: SnackFlix was designed to enhance the frequent moviegoers, adding a luxury element to their experience. This concept is appreciated by users. Two quotes from users: “Great idea! I don’t have to worry about standing in line and it’s convenient” and “Super convenient. Makes it a luxury experience”

What I learned: The conceptualisation of the app is just the beginning stage. Being able to create, test, review, and implement feedback appropriately according to users' needs is vital for the success of the app. Being empathetic and implementing accessibility so all users feel heard is something apps need to standardise.

Conclusion

In conclusion, SnackFlix stands as a testament to the power of innovation in enhancing traditional experiences. By leveraging technology to simplify the snack ordering process, SnackFlix can redefine the way movie-goers enjoy their favourite films, setting a new standard for luxury and convenience in the cinema industry.
